New Blackmagic Design 2110 IP 12G Converters and Videohubs

[10:10 Sun,13.April 2025   by Rudi Schmidts]

As expected, Blackmagic had a lot of new studio technology in store for NAB again. We noticed that many readers rarely come into contact with current video technology. However, it certainly can't hurt to know a little about what 12G or 2110 IP is all about - and in which cases you should use which solution.

12G SDI is a mature standard for professional video cabling that has evolved over the last few decades. SDI connections can therefore be found on numerous professional video devices. These are based on a point-to-point or 1:1 connection, i.e. the SDI output of a device always runs via an SDI connection to exactly one SDI input.

2110 IP, on the other hand, is based on the roughly equally old Ethernet standard for networking computers. This is a classic network connection, whereby a device connects to a network via switches and routers and can then communicate with any other device on the network. The advantage here is that you can theoretically save a lot of cable connections because you don't always have to connect individual devices in the network 1:1 with each other. Instead, all devices are connected to each other and the software decides which device speaks to which. Since this is classic PC network technology at the hardware level, relatively inexpensive hardware components such as switches or cables can be used for this, while SDI technology is usually much more expensive.

However, a central network in which everyone speaks to everyone has not only advantages. Since video data is always divided into small IP packets and sent on its way, it is not always certain that all data will arrive on the other side in time and completely - especially when there is a lot of traffic on the network. With SDI, on the other hand, the line always belongs to only one sender and one receiver, which is why data can be transmitted serially and very reliably here.
Blackmagic now supports both standards and does very good business with converters and bridges between the worlds, some of which were presented as new products at IBC.

The Blackmagic 2110 IP SDI to HDMI 12G and the Blackmagic 2110 IP SDI to HDMI 12G-10 convert 2110-IP or 12G-SDI video to HDMI in all SD, HD and Ultra HD video standards and have analog XLR outputs for operating active speakers for audio monitoring. The converters have variable gain and delay settings that are perfect for AV synchronization and 3D LUTs for calibrating screens. The Blackmagic 2110 IP SDI to HDMI 12G models are available from June at a price of USD 495 each from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide.

The Blackmagic 2110 IP UpDownCross 12G converter looks confusingly similar. This enables the conversion of SD, HD and Ultra HD video standards between all devices with 2110-IP video, 12G-SDI and HDMI video connections. The Blackmagic 2110 IP UpDownCross 12G is available from June for USD 545 from Blackmagic Design dealers worldwide.

Anyone who primarily relies on 12G SDI will be more enthusiastic about the new video hubs. These allow you to manually route inputs and outputs, i.e. switch SDI inputs to SDI outputs using buttons without having to reconnect the associated cables.

The new Blackmagic Videohub 12 G Mini models are particularly compact and are available in three versions: As a 4x2 model in 1/3 rack width, as a 6x2 model in 1/2 rack width and as an 8x4 model in 2/3 rack width. In addition to additional inputs for SDI broadcast devices, all models also offer 12G-SDI connections that process material in all SD, HD and Ultra HD video standards, as well as a clean switch on the video outputs. Blackmagic Videohub Mini Videohubs are available now from Blackmagic Design dealers worldwide from USD 595.
