New HoverAir X1 Pro and X1 Pro Max selfie drones with 4K and 8K

[15:33 Mon,19.August 2024   by Thomas Richter]

Just before the launch of DJI&s new Neo drone, HoverAir seems to be planning an upgrade to its popular competing X1 selfie drone and is teasing two new models, the X1 Pro and the X1 Pro Max. Both models offer significant improvements in video resolution compared to the original X1, which was released last year. The original X1 carved out a special niche as a compact mini-drone in the C0 drone class with a weight under 250 grams for simple selfie shots using automatic flight modes, but its resolution was limited to 2.7K and the maximum flight time was 16 minutes.

The new X1 Pro now offers 4K video recording at up to 60 frames per second (fps) and can even record in Full HD at up to 120 fps. The drone is equipped with a Type 1/2 CMOS sensor and a 17mm equivalent lens, and it reaches a tracking speed of up to 42 km/h and a maximum speed of 60 km/h.

For filmmakers who need even higher resolutions, the X1 Pro Max even offers 8K video recording at up to 30 fps, 4K at up to 120 fps, as well as a 4K HDR mode with up to 60 fps in 10-bit HLG. This model features a larger Type 1/1.3 CMOS sensor and a slightly wider 16mm lens.

Another new feature of the two new models is their suitability for use over water, snow, and cliffs—a function that was still missing in the original X1. Both drones retain the compact, foldable design of the X1 and require no flight experience from users, as they fly and film independently using automatic tracking modes.

Prices and availability of the new drones are still unknown, and the teaser images also suggest further releases—blurrily visible is another drone as well as presumably more accessories for the X1 ecosystem. It will be interesting to see when DJI&s Neo drone is introduced, which targets the same market segment as the new X1 models and is similarly sized at 157x130x49mm as the new X1 Pros at 173x149x39mm, although the latter are foldable unlike the DJI Neo, making them even smaller for transport.
