The new Spectromaster C-800 is based in many respects on the C-700 spectrometer, which has been available for some years now, but brings some improvements. According to the manufacturer, it is the first and currently the only light meter to support the Spectral Similarity Index (SSI). This was developed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and indicates how similar the light spectra of different lights are (as the name suggests). When used in a specific lighting situation, one light source is selected as the default, and it is possible to determine how close other light sources come to this value. Alternatively, a standard light value can be used as a starting point. In addition to the new SSI, the C-800 also supports colour rendering measurements according to CRI, TLCI, TLMF and TM-30-15.
Specific coordinates from the CIE1931 (x, y) color space can now also be measured and entered for matching light temperatures, if supported by the lighting manufacturer. Brightness and saturation values should be readable in order to be able to better adapt RGB LEDs to other light sources. New screen displays on the 4.3" touchscreen display should help to understand and interpret the extended measuring possibilities.
From the C-700 the C-800 inherits not only the display but also the switch layout and the rotating measuring head. The supported color temperature range is 1600 to 40,000 Kelvin, the linear CMOS image sensor measures wavelengths in 1nm steps. The Sekonic SpectroMaster C-800 is expected to cost 1,599 and be available in early 2019.
