New firmware updates for Panasonic LUMIX S1(R) and GH5(S) / G9

[11:33 Wed,6.November 2019   by Rudi Schmidts]

From 19 November 2019, Panasonic will be providing new firmware updates for its top models of the mirrorless LUMIX S and LUMIX G system camera series for free download. The biggest surprise is the LUMIX G9, which is a great match for the GH5 in the video functions and now even offers 10-bit 4:2:2 60p HDMI output (see below). But one after the other...

LUMIX S

With update 1.3 the LUMIX S1(R) gets support for CF Express cards (type B). These have the same housing as XQD cards, but theoretically allow much higher transfer speeds up to 2,000 Mbps.
Furthermore the compatibility to interchangeable lenses and lens adapters from Sigma has been improved. Now it should be possible to assign functions to the Fn keys of Sigma's L-Mount interchangeable lenses. In addition, the performance of the housing image stabilization in conjunction with the Sigma MC-21 lens adapter has been increased (rotary movements are suppressed even more effectively). The update should also make it possible to assign functions to the Fn keys of the new Panasonic LUMIX S Pro 70-200mm F2.8 O.I.S. (S-E70200).

Auto and manual focus[AF+MF] should be able to be used in AFC mode. It should also be possible to set the autofocus continuously on the Live View Screen in Creative Video mode or in other video recording modes when the video recording area is displayed. It is also possible to manually set the exposure in high-speed video mode depending on the exposure mode (P/A/S/M).

There are also other small improvements:

The Fn button can be used to check the aperture effect. The Fn buttons can now also be used to deactivate all physical operations and the autofocus auxiliary light function is added to the "Focus" tab in the video menu.

Exposure of photos (including 6K/4K photos and post-focus shots) can be controlled during playback via the HDMI output.

The AE setting can be locked using the[AF/AE LOCK] button when ISO Auto is set in M mode.

This is complemented by a Buxfix, which only affects the S1: A blue clipping effect has occurred in some cases during V-Log recording. This problem has been fixed.
In some cases, afterimages have occurred when recording in V-Log mode. This problem has also been fixed.

LUMIX G

GH5 receives firmware version 2.6, GH5S firmware version 1.4 and G9 firmware version 2.0. New AF functions are available for all models: With[AF-ON-Near Shift] the camera focuses preferably on close objects, while with[AF-ON: Far Shift] distant objects are focused. Focus Peaking function is now available not only for manual focus, but also in all autofocus modes. It is also possible to set the autofocus continuously in the Live View Screen in Creative Video mode or in other video recording modes when the video recording area is displayed.

You can also lock the AE setting using the[AF/AE LOCK] button when ISO Auto is set in M mode and[AWBw] has been added to WB mode.

The update is really exciting for G9 users: The new firmware supports the 4K 60p/50p 4:2:2 10-bit HDMI output! Also the extended 10 bit luminance range and VFR (variable frame rate) recordings (FHD 2-180fps / 4K 2-60fps) are now included. HDR video recording is also possible. The separately available software key DMW-SFU1 can also be used to activate V-Log L and the waveform monitor.
