The firmware update 5.10 for the Nikon Z 9 full-frame camera, which was spotted at Interbee, is now available. The new features mainly concern the camera&s video functions - a new shutter mode has been added which allows the shutter angle to be set in 15 steps between 5.6° and 360°. This exposure control via shutter angle originates from professional film practice and the original mechanical design of cameras with a rotary shutter. This eliminates the need to adjust the exposure time when changing the frame rate, as this is automatically in a fixed ratio to the shutter speed. This results in consistent motion blur and a similar look regardless of the desired frame rate.
The other updates can also be found in the exposure settings section of the Z 9. The color of the zebra pattern display can now be changed and the size, transparency and display position of brightness information, such as the histogram and the waveform monitor, can be individually adjusted. This should make it easier to find the correct exposure for video recordings, regardless of the subject and lighting situation. The power zoom operation, which was also shown on Interbee, was apparently not included in this update.
With these enhancements, Nikon once again emphasizes its claim to meet the requirements of professional videographers with the Z 9. Here again our test of the flagship camera, in which we take a closer look at the internal 12-bit 8K RAW, the LOG-LUT workflows, skin tone playback and slow motion function with 60p and 120p RAW, among other things.
