The extremely fast color video camera MS-500, which was announced at NAB www.slashcam.de/news/single/10x-lichtstaerker--Canon-MS-500-filmt-rauschfrei-be-17825.html, will soon be available. Thanks to its SPAD sensor, it should be possible to produce bright and noise-free images even in absolute darkness. Despite its B4 mount, however, it was not designed for filmmakers, but as a network camera for the surveillance market, where it is intended for use in areas with particularly high security standards - such as seaports, public infrastructures and national borders.
![]() Canon MS-500 with SPAD sensor and B4 lens SPAD (Single Photon Avalanche Diode) sensors process light differently than conventional sensors by using what is known as "photon counting." Photons arriving at a sensor pixel are detected individually and converted into electrical charge, where they can be directly amplified about 1 million times and extracted with high signal strength. This means that even the smallest amounts of light can be detected. In addition, each of these photons can be digitally counted, which enables noise-free signal readout. This means that clear color video recordings are possible even with as little as 0.001 lux of ambient light. ![]() The SPAD sensor in the MS-500 is of type 1" with 2.1MP effective resolution. The maximum video resolution is FullHD at 59.94p, with the signal only available at the SDI output - compared to a "normal" video camera, the MS-500 also lacks audio recording in addition to internal recording, as well as mobile power supply via battery (mains operation only). Connections include an 8-pin connector for remote controls (supporting NU & Pelco-D protocols), 3G/HD-SDI, 12-pin lens connector, genlock, DC input (12-30 V). An active cooling system is integrated to ensure longer operation. ![]() Canon MS-500 Connectors The MS-500 has a bayonet based on the B4 mount (BTA S-1005B standard), which is widely used in the broadcast industry. When the camera is used with an appropriate broadcast lens with ultra-telephoto performance, it is possible to capture subjects several kilometers away even at night. Image correction functions such as noise and haze reduction are also used to improve visibility. Due to its enormous speed, a camera with a SPAD sensor that is ready to shoot would be especially suitable for wildlife filmmakers - but there is no indication of such a model. Maybe Canon trusts that interested people will rig the MS-500 accordingly, as it happens with the also very ![]() The market launch of the MS-500 is planned for the end of August 2023, a price is not communicated. ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Neuartiger SPAD-Sensor: Canon MS-500 Kamera zählt Photonen und soll rauschfrei filmen |
