OM-3 retro DSLM announced with computational features

[12:59 Thu,6.February 2025   by blip]

Externally reminiscent of the analog Olympus DSLR OM-1, but internally close to the digital OM-1 Mark II, the new mirrorless OM-3 from OM System will soon be released. It features the same back-illuminated 4/3" Stacked Live MOS sensor (17.3mm width, 1,053 AF points) as the OM-1 Mark II, as well as the TruePic X processor. The all-around camera is aimed more at photographers with a retro penchant, but also records video in up to C4K/UHD 60p. High-speed recordings are possible at max. 1920x1080 with 240fps.

The OM-3 can internally record 10-bit H.265 videos with OM-Log400; ProRes RAW recording is possible via HDMI with an external recorder. Two new video color profiles are also on board, OM Cinema 1 and 2, but these unfortunately seem to only work in 8-bit.

Continuous video recording in 4K 30P with 10-bit is said to be unlimited at 25°C without overheating, and up to 30 minutes at 40°C. The 5-axis image stabilization (IBIS) offers compensation of up to 6.5 stops in the image center and 5.5 at the image corners. In conjunction with compatible lenses, the camera supports Sync IS, which should increase stabilization performance to up to 7.5 or 6.5 stops respectively. OM System specifies the ISO range as 80 - 102400 (upper standard setting ISO 25600).

Burst shooting is possible at up to 120 frames per second. The camera comes with several "computational" features that can be activated via a CP button, including a digital ND filter (Live ND up to ND64, Live GND up to ND8), Focus Stacking and Bracketing, Live Composite, and AI subject detection AF for subjects such as people, motorsport, birds, and pets.

The full-metal body of the OM-3 weighs approx. 496g including battery and memory card. It features an electronic OLED viewfinder with 2.36 million pixels and a 7.6cm vari-angle touch LCD with 1.62 million pixels. A new control dial allows switching between photo, video, and Q&S modes. The IP53-certified camera is also splash-proof, cold-resistant, and dust-proof and features a Super Sonic Wave Filter for sensor cleaning.

The OM-3 is expected to be available from February 27, 2025, for €1,999. In addition, new matching M.ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses will also be launched: the two fixed focal lengths 17mm F1.8 II and 25mm F1.8 II, as well as the zoom lens ED 100-400mm F5.0-6.3 IS II.
