A first public preview (alpha) version of the new On2 VP5 codec is downloadable from the manufacturer. The final Realease is indeed only in the middle of the year, but this version allows even first tests whether the new codec is really as good as announced by On2. A free registration is required. On2 praises to the somewhat older VP3 codec, the program code has been released, in view of the MPEG-4 licensing fees and Nutzungsgebuehren even as a free alternative.
