Open source AV1 video codec is there - 30% better than HEVC

After more than three years of development, AOMedia has now published the official specifications for the open source new AV1 video codec. The Alliance for Open Media includes influential companies such as Amazon, Apple, ARM, Cisco, Facebook, Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, Netflix and Nvidia. They can now start implementing hardware and software based on the specifications. The AV1 codec is the industry&s answer to the licensing chaos and the ever-imminent fees for the use of H.265/HEVC, it contains the techniques and ideas of the codecs Daala (Mozilla), Thor (Cisco) and VP10 (Google).

Especially the video portals among them like Amazon, Netflix and Google (YouTube) have a great interest in saving data with the help of the new codec, since the AV1 codec is up to

40% more effective than the HEVC/H.265 and the VP9 codec - on average 30%. Netflix, for example, still wants to use AV1 at

before the end of the year.

However, AV1 will not really start to be used until 2019, when it is increasingly implemented in hardware in e.g. SmartTVs and other devices such as Smartphone chipsets. The first AV1 support by one or more of the large Internet browsers (Firefox is already experimenting with it) will probably take place as early as 2018 and would create a broad user base and thus also an attractiveness for implementation on the server side in one fell swoop. AOMedia wants to achieve broad market penetration by 2020, i.e. that all new AV1 consumer devices coming onto the market should be able to play. (Thanks to CameraRick)
