After more than three years of development, AOMedia has now published the official

The first AV1 support by one or more of the large Internet browsers (Firefox is already experimenting with it) will probably take place as early as 2018 and would create a broad user base and thus also an attractiveness for implementation on the server side in one fell swoop. AOMedia wants to achieve broad market penetration by 2020, i.e. that all new AV1 consumer devices coming onto the market should be able to play.
