Panasonic announces four new 4K/60p camcorders with IP connectivity

[16:22 Wed,22.January 2025   by blip]

Panasonic updates four more classic camcorders, this time from its professional series. The high-end models AG-CX20 and AG-CX18, as well as the camcorders HC-X1600 and HC-X1200, are newly released – all with 4K 60p, but only marginally changed compared to the previous models; among other things, they get USB-C (now mandatory in the EU) and an improved viewfinder.

All four camcorders support multiple bitrates and formats - when configured for 10-bit recording with HDMI output, all models deliver a 4K 60p 4:2:2 output to an external recorder. All camcorders support MOV, MP4 and AVCHD formats, while the CX20 additionally supports the P2 MXF workflow with proxy recording.

The high-end model CX20 also supports live streaming in Full HD resolution via the IP-based SRT protocol and, together with the CX18, offers simultaneous SDI/HDMI outputs. The CX20 also supports NDI|HX2 IP connectivity for high-quality, low-latency live streaming in a network environment without the need for external converters. Both the CX20 and CX18 support the Real-Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP)4, which allows content to be streamed live directly to social media platforms and video sharing sites like YouTube.

Panasonic does not provide any information on the internal workings of the camcorders, so, as with the previous models, a small 1/2.5" type MOS sensor is likely to be installed. The focal length range of the 24x zoom lens remains the same at 25-600mm, as does the four-step ND filter.

The hybrid optical and electronic image stabilization is designed to detect and correct unwanted camera shake over five axes, including rotational blur. All models offer a face detection AF/AE function, which is intended to enable precise focusing and exposure of subjects, as well as high focusing speed, stability and tracking performance when shooting in 4K and FHD.

The CX20 and CX18 are equipped with Panasonic's VW-HU1 handgrip. This offers two-channel XLR audio input and control, as well as bright, adjustable LED lighting for shooting in low-light conditions. In addition, the lens zoom can also be operated via the grip.

Features of the new models:

- improved high-resolution OLED viewfinders with larger eyecups.
- a USB-C port for faster data transfer and power supply.
- low bitrate recording for FHD and MP4 recordings, supporting 28 Mbit/s, 24 Mbit/s and 20 Mbit/s.
- dual-codec recording method
- improved low-speed zoom (approx. x2.8 slower than previous models).
- extended network functionality with support for WiFi 5GHz6 and USB tethering.
- ethernet and wired LAN connectivity for stable live streaming.
- improved usability with the "HC-ROP" mobile application, which enables remote control of lenses and camera settings.
- a long-lasting, compact battery for longer recordings.
- a high-resolution 3.5-type touchscreen for improved user-friendliness.
- 2 SD card slots enabling simultaneous background recordings.

Information on prices and availability of the new camcorders is not yet available.
