RED Komodo - Radical price reduction to 2,995 dollars

RED has just radically reduced the price of its Komodo 6K cine camera from ,995 to ,995. RED Digital Cinema CEO Keiji Oishi wants to use the renewed price reduction to capitalize on the increased interest in RED since the acquisition of RED by Nikon in order to increase the user base. The Komodo 6K entry-level model is intended to introduce more users to the RED ecosystem. Along with the price reduction, RED has also released a new firmware update that brings some new features.

Key Features of the RED Komodo 6K

- High-Resolution 6K Super 35 Sensor: The camera features a 6K S35 sensor with a resolution of 6144 x 3240 pixels. This sensor is slightly wider than typical APS-C sensors.
- Global Shutter: One of the most outstanding features is the global shutter, which eliminates motion distortion that can occur with rolling shutter cameras.
- Canon RF Mount: The Komodo is equipped with a Canon RF mount, which allows the use of modern, video-friendly RF lenses. EF and PL lenses can also be used via adapters.
- REDCODE RAW (R3D): The camera records in the R3D RED RAW Codec (REDCODE) and offers various compression settings (HQ, MQ, LQ) for flexible file sizes and quality levels.
- Compact and Lightweight: With its cube-like shape (approx. 10x10x10cm) and a weight of around 1 kg, the Komodo is very compact and lightweight, making it ideal for gimbal shots and hard-to-reach locations.
- RED Control App: The camera can be comprehensively remote-controlled via smartphone app (RED Control) for iOS and Android, which makes operation easier in rigs and during solo shoots.

- Phase Detection Autofocus (Beta): The Komodo offers phase detection-based autofocus for Canon RF lenses for the first time in a RED camera, although this feature was still in beta at the time of testing.
- Low Power Consumption: The Komodo is characterized by comparatively low power consumption.
- Less Proprietary: Unlike other RED cameras, the Komodo uses standard CFast 2.0 memory cards and Canon BP batteries, which reduces the cost of accessories.
- SDI Output: For professional monitoring, the camera has a 4K SDI output.
- False Color: Two False Color modes (Exposure and Video) are available for precise exposure control.
- No HDMI/XLR: It is important to note that the Komodo does not have internal HDMI or XLR connectors. An external monitor and possibly audio solutions are required.
