RED technology to enhance Nikon cameras - REDCODE RAW? Sensors..?

[17:18 Tue,23.July 2024   by blip]

In April, RED was taken over by Nikon, a surprising move that caused quite a stir in the camera world, and also some concern on the part of RED fans. They wondered what would happen to the Made-in-America cinema cameras and received reassuring declarations of intent from Japan in response. According to a statement at the time, we could continue to expect new developments under a RED label.

At the same time, however, it was of course clear that Nikon was also interested in a technology transfer with this takeover, as the company had already explicitly listed strengthening the video sector as a medium-term business strategy in 2022.

In an interview, Nikon president Tokunari has now confirmed once again that he wants to increase the market share of the cameras through improved video performance, and that video technology from an American manufacturer acquired in the spring is to be integrated.

What does this actually mean? We had already speculated at NAB about a REDCODE RAW offensive, which was a bit premature (and probably a bit too bold) - but we are still convinced that RED RAW will be a centerpiece of the camera cooperation.

So maybe internal REDCODE RAW in the next video-savvy Nikon DSLM after all? Although Nikon RAW (modified from Tico-Raw) is also convincing, RED RAW has become something of an industry standard. Another, albeit somewhat more complicated, alternative would of course be to use RED sensors straight away. However, it is questionable whether these can be produced in the required quantities.

Furthermore, Nikon could also get RED&s help with Color Science, for example. Or, since Nikon had also listed the improvement of remote capabilities as a future project, the RED Control App with its remote control options via RED COMMAND PROTOCOL could also be adapted as a smaller project.

What do you think is likely? The discussion round is now open...
