With the 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN | Art, Sigma presents the world's first zoom lens for full-frame cameras with a continuous aperture of F1.8. This makes it somewhat similar to the 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM, which is particularly popular with film makers and is designed for an S35/APS-C image circle. Thanks to the large aperture, the new Sigma could, in the best-case scenario, render several fixed focal length lenses/primes obsolete and play its way into the hearts of many full-frame filmmakers who attach particular importance to bokeh and speed.

However, the SIGMA 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN | Art is not intended to sacrifice its extreme speed for weaknesses in the peripheral areas or in sharpness performance but, according to Sigma, can still impress with its sharpness and brilliance, which should be comparable to that of a fixed focal length lens over the entire focal length range.
The SIGMA 28-45mm F1.8 DG DN | Art has an internal zoom mechanism, a closest focusing distance of 30cm over the entire focal length range and an aperture ring with ‘De-Kl’.
aperture ring with ‘de-click function’ and aperture ring lock switch. This allows film-makers and photographers to adjust the aperture continuously and silently.

Sigma emphasises that the optical aberrations are rigorously corrected by the arrangement of five SLD elements and three aspherical elements over the entire zoom range. This optical design is also said to effectively suppress focus breathing, which should enable particularly natural-looking focus pulls in video recordings. Thanks to the HLA motor (High-Response Linear Actuator), the autofocus should react particularly quickly and precisely.
In addition to a Super Multi-Layer Coating (SML), which reduces stray light and ghost images, SIGMA's own technology, Nano Porous Coating (NPC), is used once again.
Here, a thin layer of silicon dioxide is applied to the lenses, in which nanometre-fine pores allow the light to enter the glass almost completely without scattering it. In this way, reflections are to be reduced even further than would be possible with conventional multi-layer coatings alone. This should enable clear images without flares and ghosting even in backlighting. The filter diameter is 82mm.
