Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra: 8K video, 960fps super slow motion and up to 100x zoom

Samsung has introduced the latest generation of its top-of-the-line Galaxy smartphone series - the Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+, S20 Ultra and the foldable Galaxy Z Flip. The main focus is on improving the camera capabilities in order to be able to compete with the Chinese manufacturers Huawei and Xiaomi, who have so far been in this field. Samsung&s leap in the nomenclature is somewhat confusing, as the last version series was named Galaxy S10 - instead of S11, it is now called S20.

All models use Samsung&s own 2.73 GHz Exynos 990 7-nanometer SoC with eight cores (in some regions outside Europe also the Snapdragon 865) and are now - except for the Ultra model, which is optional - equipped with the new 5G mobile phone standard. Depending on the model, 8 or 12 GB LPDDR5 RAM and 128 GB (S20), 128/256 GB (S20+) or 128/256/512 GB flash memory (S20 Ultra) are optionally integrated.

The most interesting new features mainly concern the (up to four on the back) integrated cameras, such as 8K video, a lossless digital zoom thanks to high-resolution image sensors, an improved night mode (including special Night Hyperlapse) and simultaneous recording with all cameras including later selection, as well as the possibility to save 33 MP high-resolution still images from an 8K video.

However, the top camera features are reserved for the new (and expensive) top model S20 Ultra: not only does it have a together with Xiaomi from Samsung&s own development 1/1.33" Isocell sensor with 108 megapixels, but thanks to its 48 megapixel tele-sensor with 3.3 optical zoom (and 10x digital) it can also zoom up to 100x per super resolution.

All three models feature ultra wide angle, wide angle and telephoto cameras. The ultra-wide-angle camera in all three models comes with an f/2.2 aperture lens and a 12-megapixel sensor, while the wide-angle camera has 12 megapixels and f/1.8 OIS (S20/S20+) or 108 megapixels and f/1.8 (S20 Ultra). The telephoto camera has 64 megapixels and an aperture of f/2.0 OIS (S20/S20+) or 48 megapixels and f/3.5 OIS (S20 Ultra).
The S20+ and S20 Ultra also have a special time-of-flight (ToF) camera for distance measurements with VGA resolution, which can be used to create an artificial bokeh. In Pro and Professional Photo/Video mode, manual settings such as ISO value, shutter speed and exposure time can be made.

The video capabilities have also been improved - for example, the new S20 models are capable of recording 8K video (7,680 x 4,320 at 24fps) for the first time. In addition, 4K (3,840 x 2,160 at 60fps) and 1-second super-super-slow motion at 720p/960fps and 1080p at 240fps can also be recorded. Other features include HDR10+ video recording (but still beta stage and only with the rear main camera) and 20x (Ultra) or 10x digital zoom during video recording and a Tracking AF.

Samsung has also attached particular importance to video stabilisation - several systems are to ensure unshaky video: new features include AI motion analysis and anti-roll stabilisation in addition to optical stabilisation and electronic stabilisation using the large image sensors.

The Galaxy S20 (128 GB) costs 899 euro, the 5G version 100 euro more; the S20+ (128 GB) 999 euro, the 5G version is again 100 euro more expensive, the version with 5128 GB and 5G costs 1.249 euro. The top model S20 Ultra 5G 128 GB is available for 1,349 euro, the 512 GB version for 1,549 euro. Delivery will start on March 13th - until March 8th, pre-orderers of the Galaxy S20+ and S20 Ultra will receive the new Galaxy Buds+ as a bonus.
