5K monitors with UHD+ resolution (5,120 x 2,880) are popular among professionals but still rare, so it's now good news that Samsung's ViewFinity S9 announced at CES 2023 in January will finally be available soon. The 27-inch Samsung ViewFinity S9 (model name: S90PC) - not to be confused with the 49" ViewFinity S9U - is the successor to the ViewFinity S8, which was only introduced in June 2022, and like the latter, it is aimed squarely at professional users with features such as a matte display and an integrated color calibration engine. In terms of design, the ViewFinity S9 resembles one of its two 5K QHD+ competitors, namely the Apple Studio Display.

The matte display of the Viewfinity S9, which reduces annoying light reflections and has a pixel density of 218 ppi, covers the professional sRGB color space by 100% and the DCI-P3 color space by 99% and is thus even a notch better than the predecessor S8. Unlike Apple, whose matte nanotexture version of the Studio Display costs an extra , Samsung does not charge extra for this handy feature.

The Viewfinity S9 complies with the HDR 600 standard and therefore has a typical of 600 nits with a contrast ratio of 1,000:1 and a refresh rate of 60 Hz. However, like Apple's Studio Display, this seems to be fixed, which is suboptimal, especially for video editing, since videos with other frame rates (such as 29.97/50/48 or 47.952 Hz) cannot be displayed natively during preview.
The integrated color calibration engine of the Samsung ViewFinity S9 enables an accurate color and brightness display, and by means of the Samsung Smart Calibration App, the white balance, gamma value and RGB color balance can conveniently be calibrated via smartphone (Samsung Galaxy or iPhone) only without dedicated extra hardware.

The Viewfinity S9's interfaces include a mini DisplayPort, as well as three USB-C ports and a Thunderbolt 4 port that can provide up to 96W of charging power to connected notebooks. In addition, the Viewfinity S9 has an attachable 4K SlimFit smart camera that can be used to conduct native video conferences via apps included in the Samsung Smart Hub, such as Google Meet, without the need for additional hardware. Since Samsung's Tizen TV OS is installed, various apps, for example from streaming services, can also be run on the monitor like on a SmartTV and thus, for example, movies from the web can be watched directly via Netflix. As can be seen in one of the press pictures, the S9 also masters the pivot mode, i.e. it can also be used upright.

The Samsung ViewFinity S9 is to be launched in August at a price of 1,729 euros. For estimation: the also 27" 5K Apple Studio Display with nanotexture glass (but without a height-adjustable stand, which Apple pays extra for) costs around 2,000 euros, while the also matte 27" LG Ultrafine 5K is already available from around 930 euros.
