Approximately 2,500 employees will lose their jobs with the closure of "Nikon Imaging China". The factory produced compact cameras and DSLR lenses. Nikon argues that the market for compact cameras is shrinking dramatically and blames smartphones in particular.
This is in line with Nikon's strategy change to focus on high-priced cameras in the future. Competing models to successful compact cameras from Sony (RX10/100) and Panasonic (among others LX100) with a large sensor were announced, but never reached the market.
But there are also rays of hope to report. The operating profit at by Nikon this year is 7.7 percent higher than originally expected. It would be a nice birthday present if this increase in profits in the hundredth year of existence would mark the beginning of an upward trend.
