Sony showed the prototype of a new 85" 8K (7,680 × 4,320 pixels) HDR LED TV on the CES 2018, which impressed all viewers with its blazing brightness of 10,000 cd/m² (nits). The brightness, which is literally dazzling in the truest sense of the word, comes into its own in images of headlights from oncoming cars, for example, which then dazzle the spectators as in real life. By way of comparison, the brightest TV currently on the market has a brightness of only 2,000 nits.

Sony 85 HDR 8K-TV with 10,000 nits brightness
However, this new, maximum brightness should not be used to make the overall picture simply brighter, but only for highlights in the picture, which make the overall impression appear more realistic thanks to large contrasts. The ultra-bright display uses a prototype of Sony's new image processor X1 Ultimate, which is supposed to be twice as powerful as the current X1 Extreme and is thus able to process 8K images in real time - for the first time object-oriented and no longer image-for-picture like the predecessor model. Sony has not yet announced when a 10,000 nits TV will be launched in 2018.
