The Airpeak S1 drone for professional users went on sale around three years ago - now its end has been announced. Due to unspecified “changes in the business environment”, Sony will end production of the drone on March 31, 2025, as the manufacturer announced on its Japanese website. Support for existing customers will continue until 2030. ;) Sony Airpeak S1 with With the Airpeak S1, Sony wanted to secure a slice of the lucrative aerial photography pie, but the drone does not come fully equipped and ready to use with an integrated camera, instead it must be fitted with a mirrorless Sony Alpha camera. This and the additionally required gimbal are available separately. As the Airpeak S1 alone costs around 9,000 dollars, this is not a very cheap solution. On the other hand, the  current DJI Inspire 3 is also very expensive at 14,999 euros (price including Zenmuse X9-8K Air full-frame gimbal camera).
Camera setups weighing up to one kilogram can be used with the Sony Airpeak S1; the Gremsy T3 gimbal with its 1.2 kg can also be used. At full load, the maximum flight time is 12 minutes. The drone itself weighs around 3.1 kilograms without batteries. Although Sony is aiming this combination at more professional users with high demands on the captured image, it seems that many of them also appreciate a fast and portable drone setup à la DJI Mavic & co for their aerial shots. At the other end of the spectrum are the larger drones from drone pioneer Freefly (Alta-X), or the aforementioned DJI Inspire.
