Sony will equip its 8K Raw Cine/Documentary camera Burano with even more user-requested features in its upcoming firmware update version 2.0, scheduled for March 2025. These include new recording formats, a new 1.8x de-squeeze, and monitoring improvements. Sony Burano New Recording Formats via Burano Firmware Version 2.0Announced for the Burano firmware version 2 were new recording formats such as a new 3.8K full-frame crop mode, utilizing almost the entire sensor and enabling recordings at up to 120 fps, as well as a 1.9K mode with up to 240 fps. These new recording modes allow filmmakers to prioritize a faster frame rate at the cost of resolution, depending on the demands of their application. Further new recording formats include 24.00 fps in the X-OCN 16:9 image modes and the following:
*SDI and HDMI output not available at 240 fps Firmware 2.0 also introduces a 1.8x de-squeeze setting and additional high frame rate (S & Q) modes, including 66, 72, 75, 88, 90, 96, and 110 fps. Proxy recording is also added for 24.00 fps recording formats. Improvements in Monitoring, SDI, and MetadataThe new firmware also provides the Burano with various monitoring and metadata improvements, including standardized SDI video output ("Monitor FHD") for monitoring X-OCN and XAVC. It adds metadata for breathing compensation and image stabilization in X-OCN, as well as metadata for timecode and clip names for SDI output. Sony Burano Further innovations include an improved screen display, which places camera status information outside the image and also includes a viewfinder gamma display assist when using S-Log3 for monitoring. The menu for the PL-mount voltage is also expanded to include a 24V output, and compatibility with focus/iris/zoom control for PL-mount lenses is added when using the optional BURANO handgrip GP-VR100. Improved Image Output and Additional Exposure ToolsImage output is improved, including when using the preset S-Log3 look or 3D User LUTs. Furthermore, firmware 2.0 improves autofocus performance when shooting at frame rates of 23.98, 24, 25, and 29.97. New are also additional exposure tools (High/Low Key), derived from the flagship VENICE camera system. In addition, the white balance presets are expanded from 3 to 8, and active/high image stabilization is supported in the Full-Frame Crop 6K and Super 35 1.9K 16:9 image modes. Sony Burano User-friendliness is enhanced by the ability to format media from the status screen and to set CAM ID and Reel Number, which is standard for documentary and reality TV applications. The factory default frequency setting is also changed from 59.94 to 23.98p, and the ability to reset to factory settings is added. New is also live event and multicam functionality, including variable ND control from RCPs, improved camera control from Camera Remote SDK, and tally control for LAN-connected devices. AvailabilityThe new Burano firmware version 2.0 is expected to be released in March 2025. Filmmakers can easily download the update directly to their camera using a Mac or PC.
