Sony has just introduced its new fast G Master full-frame fixed focal length, the 50mm F1.4. Unlike the Zeiss Planar T* FE 50mm F1.4 ZA introduced in 2016, Sony says it has worked on four key requirements: 1.Higher image quality, 2. Better AF performance with current Sony cameras, 3. Better moving image support, and 4. A more compact, lightweight design. ![]() Sony G Master 50mm F1.4 Measuring 80.6 x 96mm at 516g, the new Sony G Master 50mm F1.4 is significantly more compact and lighter than the 2016 Zeiss version (83.5 x 108mm at 780g). Looking at the MTF chart of the new Sony fixed focal length, the most striking feature is the high contrast in the center of the image compared to its Zeiss predecessor. Something has also changed in the minimum focusing distances. Thus, the new Sony G Master 50mm F1.4 now lands at 0.41m in AF and 0.38m in MF mode (Zeiss 0.45m).
In terms of optical design, Sony uses 14 elements in 11 groups, with both ED (Extra-Low Dispersion glass) and two XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements. The aperture consists of 11 blades and the filter diameter is 67mm. With almost the same dimensions and weight, the new G-Master 50mm F1.4 complements the existing 35mm and 24mm F1.4 G Masters, which also have a 67mm filter thread installed. This results in an interesting fixed focal length set that Sony explicitly recommends for gimbal/film users as well. ![]() With up to 1.9x faster AF speed compared to its predecessor (thanks to XD linear motors), the new Sony fixed focal length is also supposed to be suitable for filming at high frame rates including 120 fps. In addition to the familiar focus ring, aperture ring and AF/M button, the new Sony G Master features an optional de-clickable aperture, focus hold button, linear MF functions as well as being the first Sony fixed focal length to feature an Iris Lock function. Like the previous G Master lenses, all switches and connections on the 50mm F1.4 are protected against dust and moisture. The new Sony G Master F1.4 GM will be available from March this year at a price of €1,700 (RRP). ![]() deutsche Version dieser Seite: Sony stellt neues Vollformat G Master 50mm F1.4 vor: Leichter, reaktiver und optimiert für Video |
