The Hundred Film Fund - Runway launches its own AI film funding programme

Runway ML, known for its eponymous video AI, has launched a film fund specifically designed to support film projects that use generative AI. The "Hundred Film Fund" aims to help finance 100 films that may fall outside the scope of traditional film funding or financing, either because they use Runway Gen-3 to generate images instead of (or in addition to) footage shot with a camera.

It doesn&t matter what type of film format is involved—eligible projects include feature films, short films, documentaries, experimental projects, as well as music videos, animated films, or other types of films. The fund is currently endowed with 5 million dollars and is expected to increase to 10 million dollars. Funding for individual films ranges from 5,000 to 1 million dollars, with up to 2 million dollars available in the form of Runway credits, which can be used to generate AI clips via Runway Gen-3—an essential cost factor in AI-based films.

A prerequisite for funding is that the project must already be in development, with Runway being used to some extent throughout the production chain, and the project must also demonstrate additional funding. The project must not yet be completed. Films can be in any language but must include an English-subtitled version of the finished film.
