There are now only a few suppliers of Blu-ray players left. Alongside Panasonic, Sony and Magnetar, LG was one of the last major manufacturers of Blu-ray players, but that now seems to be history. LG&s “latest” products were the UBK80 and UBK90 UHD players, which were launched 6 years ago (2018). In Germany, only the cheaper model LG UBK80 
for approx. 180 euros has been available recently. So it should come as little surprise that, according to various reports, LG has now decided to leave the Blu-ray market for good.

The reason for the extinction of Blu-ray players is, of course, the sharp decline in sales figures for physical data carriers. Many stores have now given up selling or renting Blu-ray and DVD discs because consumer sentiment has clearly shifted towards streaming.
However, there are still enthusiasts who do not want to accept the fact that the rights to the media they have purchased can be taken away from them at any time. After all, anyone who purchases a film digitally only receives a license to use the product in question, not unrestricted ownership. If a film disappears from a provider&s library, it can no longer be viewed by the buyer. In addition, the quality of streaming is usually visibly worse than watching a movie on Blu-ray. And last but not least, physical media can be used to create a trouble-free movie night even if the internet goes down. Real cineastes therefore prefer to put relevant films on their own shelf.
Incidentally, LG Korea itself has not yet officially confirmed the company&s withdrawal from the Blu-ray market, which leaves the door slightly ajar for a possible comeback if demand increases. However, it is certain that production has currently been discontinued. So if you are still looking for an unusual gift for Christmas, this may be the last chance to pick one up.
