Topaz Labs launches new AI tool Project Starlight to improve videos

[11:31 Wed,26.February 2025   by Thomas Richter]

Topaz Labs, known for its various AI tools for upscaling and enhancing old images and videos, has introduced a brand-new tool called Project Starlight, which is said to produce significantly better results than previous offerings. According to Topaz Labs, Project Starlight is the first (and currently only) AI model that uses a diffusion model for video enhancement, the same method used by most generative video AIs. Topaz is offering the new model for free as part of a research preview.

What can Project Starlight do?

Project Starlight provides a variety of otherwise separate functionalities to automatically enhance videos: it denoises, upscales, sharpens, improves various classic image artifacts from analog film material, and can also remove aliasing artifacts (such as stair-stepping) – all without requiring manual adjustments.

Topaz Labs demonstrates the impressive capabilities of the new model using old historical footage of the Wright brothers, Albert Einstein, or John F. Kennedy, which are not only very noisy and have very low resolution, but also exhibit various image artifacts. For home users, such a model is ideal for making old Super 8 or VHS recordings look better; professional users, such as documentary filmmakers, could use Starlight to enhance old archive footage.

However, with such post-processing enhancement – especially regarding upscaling, which creates more image details – using generative AI, it should be considered that the new images do not correspond to (the then) reality, but are essentially guessed, and additional image details are added that are "most likely".

Cloud-Based Computing Power

Due to the extremely high GPU computing power required for the model, it runs – unlike previous Topaz tools such as Video AI, Photo AI, or Gigapixel – only in the cloud and not on a home PC. This has the advantage that you can edit your videos independently of your own system performance, and the model can be continuously improved by Topaz Labs without having to install a software update. The disadvantage, of course, is the higher cost – Topaz has not yet announced a price, but high GPU computing power in the cloud automatically means higher costs.

This circumvents the problem of having to run a large diffusion video model on a home PC and allows for much higher computing power (and more GPU memory) to be used for the model – currently, the model runs on an NVIDIA H100. But ultimately, the price will determine for which tasks Starlight will be used.

Free Trial

Project Starlight can currently be tried for free – either via the web interface or via Topaz VideoAI. Up to 3 clips with a maximum of 300 individual images can be processed per week – but it can take up to 20 minutes for the result to be available, which already indicates that the performance requirements are very high. But beware: since this is a research preview of the new model, the video material uploaded by users can be used to improve and train the model.

After demonstrating the model&s capabilities, Topaz Labs wants to optimize the extremely high GPU requirements to see how small the model can be made without losing quality. If it can be reduced in size, it would also be possible to run it on other platforms, thus making its operation cheaper. For comparison: Topaz Labs Video AI 6, which offers similar functionality – albeit at lower quality – and runs locally, currently costs around .

This example also shows the successful combination of two AI tools: a photo of Einstein is realistically animated using ByteDance&s OmniHuman, which can create realistic videos from a single photo of a person, and then enhanced using Starlight.
