Yuneec develops Typhoon H3 drone together with Leica

[15:36 Fri,27.September 2019   by Thomas Richter]

Leica has entered into a long-term partnership with the Chinese drone manufacturer Yuneec and both have presented their first jointly developed camera drone, the Typhoon H3. This hexacopter is equipped with the ION L1 Pro camera with a large 1" sensor with a resolution of 5.5K, which is intended to provide high-quality aerial photography. Using a 3-axis gimbal, it can record stabilized 20 MP photos and 4K videos at up to 60 frames per second (HEVC) or 30p (H.264). It is capable of recording real DCI 4K (4,096 x 2,160) video.

The camera offers features such as user-defined image mode and focus settings, Leica calibrated DNG with corresponding ADOBE profile, Wide Dynamic Range, Short JPEG intervals for hyperlapse videos, Leica optimized and tuned image modes (AWB, Color reproduction, sharpening, de-noising, and more).v.m.), a 10-bit YLog video mode based on Leica specifications, a lossless digital zoom as well as semi-automatic modes, ISO values or exposure intervals according to the example of normal cameras. With the help of the integrated 3-axis gimbal and the retractable landing gear, the camera can be rotated 360° for unlimited 360° panoramic shots.

The flying time of the Typhoon H3, which weighs exactly 2kg, is up to 25 minutes. Included is the Android-based ST16S remote control, which has an integrated 7" display on which the live image is shown via video downlink in 720p HD up to a distance of 1.6km. If desired, the live image of the camera can also be transmitted to an external monitor via an HDMI output.

Of course the Typhoon H3 also has intelligent flight modes - a Miss for modern camera drones - like the Follow Me/Watch Me, Curve Cable Cam, Orbit Me or Journey mode. Data security is of paramount importance: all communication takes place only between the drone and the remote control and all data is stored locally and not in a cloud on the network. The user has full control over his data.

Leica and Yuneec thus follow the example of DJI, which has long since entered into a partnership with Hasselblad. This is Leica&s second cooperation with a Chinese manufacturer, as Leica has been supplying camera know-how for Huaweis smartphones since 2016.

In addition to the Typhoon H3 with ION L1 Pro camera, the scope of delivery includes the ST16S remote control, 2 batteries, a charger, a neck strap for the ST16S remote control, an optional patch antenna, an SD card as well as USB and power cables. The Typhoon H3 is not yet available, but the price of around 2,400 Euro is already fixed. The price is a bit higher than the DJI Mavic Enterprise Zoom, which only has a camera with 1/2.3" sensor and can record 4K with a maximum of 30 frames per second. Initial tests will have to show how good the image quality of the Leica/Yuneec camera is compared to DJIs Mavic.
