Zoom introduced a new MicTrak recorder series over the weekend that should be of interest to many videographers. The MicTrak series combines a stereo microphone with a 32-bit float recorder for clipping-free audio recording without having to adjust the recording level.
The M3 is the first shotgun microphone with 32-bit float recording. Due to the MS stereo microphone, you can switch between mono and stereo mode with a recording angle of 90 or 120 degrees. In addition, the M3 always saves a mid-side RAW file that can be used to adjust the stereo width of the recording in post-processing. Via the 3.5 mm stereo output, it can be connected to almost any camera with a microphone input to facilitate the subsequent synchronisation of audio and video in post-production with this "backup copy". The M4 MicTrak is the first portable 4-track recorder with 32-bit float recording and built-in timecode generator. The M4 has 2 external XLR/jack combo inputs and a built-in X/Y stereo microphone and records in 32-bit float. According to Zoom, the M4 is the quietest handheld recorder ever. Here, too, elastically mounted X/Y microphones and a special surface coating ensure a considerable reduction in grip noise. ;) The M4&s built-in timecode generator has a professional accuracy of 0.2 ppm, so synchronising audio and video in post-production should be a breeze. The M4&s colour LCD allows you to monitor the waveform in real time, and the normalisation function can be used to generate an optimal level already in the unit. Also practical: both the M2 and the M4 can be used as a 32-bit USB-C audio interface. The M2 and M3 cost around 275 euros, the M4 4-track recorder is around 550 euros.
