With the ambiMIK-1, miniDSP has launched a microphone that captures 360° sound for a variety of application scenarios - from music recording to the production of augmented and virtual reality content. The microphone connects directly to a computer (PC/Mac) via USB, eliminating the need for a sound card, external preamplifier or XLR cables.
The ambiMIK-1 comes with 3D audio software specially developed for the microphone by Swedish sound specialist Dirac. Using a VST/AU software plug-in, producers can convert the recorded 3D sound into binaural sound for immersive listening over standard headphones or VR headsets.

The ambiMIK-1 uses four 14-millimeter capsules with cardioid polar pattern to pick up sound from different directions. Its lightweight aluminum housing accommodates integrated analog-to-digital converters and an integrated preamplifier including USB processor. It is capable of recording 32-bit multi-channel audio at sampling rates from 44.1 up to 192 kHz.
Using Dirac Tools, the amibMIK-1 can output audio in Ambisonic B format, which is popular for post-processing in virtual reality applications, or in binaural format for listening to surround sound with headphones. It is available immediately at a price of approximately and comes with a license for the custom Dirac VST/AU plug-in, a shielded USB cable, a mini tripod and a windscreen.
