This low depth of field because you do depends for the most part of the Aperture from. Small aperture = small depth = the effect you want.
On the other hand, it depends from the zoom. Tele = Grings depth = the effect you want.
And finally, the distance is still the object of a role: Small distance = small depth of field = the effect you want.
This effect is Henkel with men in any case possible, if somewhat more difficult as synonymous with the big brothers.
For the HVX, I know nothing definite. I would not know that it does not work ... because at the Canon XH-A1 just rumgeschlampert.
