Hi,
a simple way the effect is to move the vertices. You should continue to you the effects in the group Distort just watch.
On the other hand is for me to work with paths (masks) usually
appropriate, or the import of paths from PS or AI.

If I understand this right then?
A solid color is my starting point, then I add a mask, and then they covered everything that should not belong to my desired "shape".
eg if I want to have a star> Solid> star-shaped mask> Shown left is the colored surface of the star-shape.
I've made so far synonymous. I just wonder whether this does not cost computing power for the preview. Already, right? In contrast, if I have a ready-starred form into After Effects (bring with Photoshop for example).

Look at it this way: if you have a ready-made graphics you use, if not, they themselves do your base is, of course, the solid color, or your own material. Masks conceal the content, or stress as you desire. You can do arbitrary things with it.
