I have a slideshow for the pictures accurately scaled to 1024x576 pixels and still be very unpleasant m2v's rendered, all edges are verfranzt ...
The Render Settings in DVD Studio Pro are ok 2pass VBR.
Why is that?
In the supplement the original and the rendered picture. View in original size!

I think you want the images to 16:9 dvd pack, plus you should know that 16:9 has a pixel resolution of 720x576 to dvd rectangular (aspect ratio 1,46:1), which is theoretically approx 1050x576 pixel square.
your pictures are thus rescaled and indeed of rectangular to square (1024 or correct 1050) (720) pixel in width, which has consequences for the stair steps.
I think the effect can be mitigated, if you are relaying for your software, the images in full resolution.

It is clear that an anamorphic Pal-Picture not with a better resolution Jpeg is similar, but SRone is right: An encoder should normally get better quality than original. But there is indeed the Photoshop preset "Pal Widescreen". 2-Pass VBR for still images but does nothing (for moving images not synonymous, one-pass CBR at high data rates, better it is not), but can not be synonymous, the cause of the really bad result, what you've got.
