Frage von Jan-Paul:Hello,
I have a file that is 4.4 GB in size. This I would now like to burn to a DVD (4.7 GB). However, the whole thing does not fit on it.
Then I looked over the info how much is the capacity of the DVD. There, only 4.29 GB are listed.
I use a G5 Powermac with Mac OS X.3.9 with the following drive: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D.
Is this normal? What is not true with the hardware? The drivers?
Thank you
Antwort von PowerMac:
As for a DVD? Data DVD? Video DVD? What are you burning?
Antwort von Jan-Paul:
Video DVD. But if no preference, as synonymous, I can burn them as data DVD.
I either burn myself with OS X or Toast Titanium 7th
With those hats but not worked.
Here is a screen shot of the info. I recently got the DVD from the package and did the same game with multiple discs. The DVDs are Of Intenso.
Screenshot hanging off than attachment.

The Manufacturer has correctly
Antwort von Jan-Paul:
hm, of Gib I hear for the first time. The exact size varies, however, of the specified number GB: 4,667,848,704 bytes
This would account for 4.7 * 1,000,000,000 bytes = 4.7 GB = 4.7 GB fit yes.
I'm baffled. I was thinking DVD burn was easier ...
Antwort von PowerMac:
Nah. You have 4:29 GB free on the disc, but you have a 4.4 GB file. That does not fit.
Antwort von Jan-Paul:
That can not be, since I have checked 6 different blanks of a completely new spindle, and all had only 4.29 GB. According to the manufacturer, the blanks have a capacity of 4.7 GB.
It should therefore somehow fit.
Has anyone any idea why this is and how do I change it?
Antwort von VolkerS:
The problem is that when size information for DVD, hard disks ect. The sizes "wrong" to be specified. Thus it is always nice "straight" are values calculated as above is simplified, so 1 GB = 1000 Mb = 1000 Kb, etc.
But this is actually wrong, because the digital technology is expected in binary. 1 byte has 8 bits. 1Kilobyt (2 "high" 10), therefore 1024 bytes and so what gives with 1 Gb then 1,073,741,824 bytes. That is, the real capacity of disks is always smaller than indicated of the manufacturers.
Also again as explained here:

Nah. You have 4:29 GB free on the disc, but you have a 4.4 GB file. That does not fit. Your disc is 4.7 GB in size. He's only 4:29 GB. This is due to the conversion problem (which it has been around longer). Ergo your file is 4.4 GB with still too large.
