So in my Panasonic DVX100, Canon xl1/s/2 is synonymous. So you can assume that it should go.

It is not. You have to (in the menu) to decide whether you have connected the internal mic, which sometimes. through an external mic with mini-jack off mechanically, or the XLR inputs want to use.
