I use VirtualDubMod and Divx 6 for mpeg2 files that are on my DVB-S card have to edit.

Some films will be broadcast in true 16:9, with some in letterboxed 4:3. (In both cases, incidentally, you have rectangular pixels. Square pixels, there is no DVB-S.)
Black bars are not autonomous, that it is 4:3 letterbox, when a Cinemascope movie is shown to remain even in 16:9 still black bars.

Sat 1 has a relatively long S.4 :3-held format (RTL long as the important series is broadcast in 16:9). And probably the old episodes, which at this time are synchronized, so only in a letterboxed version. The same is true for samples of older films - still synonymous with the public broadcasters.
